Garage door spring and cable replacement

Springs do the heavy lifting on a garage door. The motor only guides it. When a spring breaks, the full weight of the door lands on the cables and the motor, and the door can't be opened safely.

Spring and cable work is the one garage door job we always say not to try yourself. The springs are wound under enough tension to cause serious injury. We carry common sizes on the van and replace springs and cables as a matched set.

Replacing springs safely

  1. Secure the door

Clamp the door so it can't move while springs and cables are off.

  2. Unwind and remove

The remaining spring tension is released with proper winding bars.

  3. Fit matched parts

New springs sized to the door's weight and height, plus new cables if the old ones are worn.

  4. Tension and balance

The door is balanced so it holds at mid-height by hand, then tested with the motor.

Questions we get asked

Can I open the door with a broken spring?

Please don't. Without the spring the door is dead weight, and lifting it or running the motor can bring it down suddenly or damage the opener.

How long does spring replacement take?

Usually around an hour once we're on site, if we carry the right size spring. Unusual sizes may need ordering.

Why did my spring break?

Springs are rated for a number of open-close cycles. They wear out with use, and rust shortens their life, which is common close to the coast.
